Character_
Miss Adela Strangworth
In this story Possibility of Evil, Miss Strangeworth comes out as a sweet lady in the beginning. She owns a little garden of roses in front if her house that she claims her grandmother planted, and her mother tended. Whenever tourists stop by to admire the garden, she likes to says that her grandfather built the first house on the Pleasant street, and she grew up with this little town. She loves her fragrant rose garden. We can conclude that Miss Strangeworth doesn't like to ruin her garden since she lets nobody else pick the roses except for herself. Also, by the way how she keeps everything clean and tidy, it is easy to say that she is a very organized lady. Well, Miss Strangeworth lives in this peaceful and small town where every neighbor knows each other. Each morning they greet and see each other so people can easily know what is going, and how each family's situation is in each others houses. However, as the story goes on there are a few signs from the neighbors Miss Strangworth notices, that shows there is a slight problem in the town. Mr. Lewis seems tired, Martha is not looking good, and Linda ran crying all the way to school in the morning. This mystery is revealed later in the story as Miss Strangworth starts writing letters containing insults or harsh words to the people in the town. Soon Miss Strangeworth is given a taste of her own medicine by Don Crane and maybe other towns people who figured out that the nasty letters were from Miss Strangeworth. Her rose garden is ruined in the end of the story. At first, it may be easy to say that Miss Strangeworth just tries to look nice but actually is an evil lady. Just like the title of this story, there is possibility of evil in her. However, as I thought more deeply about her actions to the tourists, it could also be because she thought she had a responsibility for the town's image because of the long history her family had in this town. So, Miss Strangworth's action maybe understandable in some ways, but I personally think that she needs to be a bit more careful and think about how others would feel like when they read her letters.
