Theme of "The Possibility of Evil"
I think that the theme of "The Possibility of Evil", by Shirley Jackson, is that the illusion of good through evil can, and does, create blindness. This is represented with the character Miss Strangeworth. She sent anonymous letters to other people in town, spreading rumors through these letters because she believes that people are evil and need to be redirected. She is so blinded by her belief that she is restoring good that she doesn't realize the damage her letters are causing to the community instead of helping it. In the end, when her evil is discovered by a dropped letter, Mr. Crane (the person who was originally supposed to get the letter) destroys what she loves the most; her prized and famous roses.
