Classic or Non-Classic?
I think that the short story, The Possibility of Evil, is a classic. In this short story, Miss Adela Strangeworth shows life, truth, and beauty because she thinks she is helping stop the evil in her town, but she is actually contributing to it. She thinks that writing letters about the truth and the evil is helping people, but it is actually degrading to the people in her town. Anyone can learn a lesson from this story because it teaches you to think about your actions and reflect on whether you are actually harming someone when you think you are helping them. This short story touches our human experience because we can relate to it. Many people in this world want to help other people, but sometimes they do it in the wrong way and it makes whoever they wanted to help even more upset. Sometimes the people we make more upset are angry and yell at us. In the story, the person she thought she was "helping", got mad when she found out who was writing the letters and destroyed all of Miss Strangeworth's beloved roses. This short story also stands the test of time because no matter what decade we are in, we can always understand what is happening. This story was written in 1965 and people can still learn a lesson from it.
